Washington Monument as it stood for 25 years. Construction began on the monument in 1848, but Civil War and lack of funds held off completion until 1885. Evidence of the halt in construction is still visible today; when construction resumed, builders were unable to find the same quarry stone used in the initial construction and, as a result, the bottom third of the monument is a slightly lighter shade than the rest of the construction.
