Title - The Body of Abraham Lincoln Lays in State

 

Description - Photo depicts the last known photo of Abraham Lincoln; laid out in his coffin in the rotunda of New York's City Hall for viewing on April 24, 1865.  Although his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln, had banned photographs being taken of her husband's corpse, Brig. Gen. E.D. Townsend, who attended the viewing, let a local photographer take a picture of the slain president.
