He was hanged in 1865 for his role in the Lincoln conspiracy plot.  Powell, along with John Wilkes Booth, David Herold and George Atzerodt, were to carry out the planned assassinations of President Abraham Lincoln (by Booth), Vice President Andrew Johnson (by Atzerodt), and Secretary of State William Seward (by Powell) on the night of April 14, 1865.  Only Booth was successful.
