Description -  Charles Robert Darwin (February 12, 1809 - April 19, 1882), English naturalist, geologist and biologist.  He postulated that all species of life descended over time from common ancestors and, in a joint publication with Alfred Russel Wallace, introduced his scientific theory that this branching pattern resulted from a process that he called natural selection.
